IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. I just got your letter and glad to advice you about learning a new sport.

In my opinion, swimming is the best sport that I recommend to you, not only because it is a life-saving skill but also refresh yourself and keeps you healthy. Moreover, it's a responsible sport, because you can save your's as well as other's when required.

There is a swimming academy just opened near to my workplace, where a lot of students have already secured their admission. It's really affordable and worldclass. In addition, it has five star rating in google.

After next month, I am also planning to join this academy to learn swimming, and was looking for someone to accompany me.Therefore, I would tell you to join if you are interested in this sport.

Let me know if you are interested in learning swimming as a new sport, and I am excited to join with you.

Best regards,

Sree

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you recommend swimming, explain that your friend could join a nearby academy, and invite them to learn with you. The reasons that swimming is a “life-saving skill” and can keep someone healthy make the recommendation relevant, while the academy’s affordability and rating add practical support. Your friendly opening and closing also suit an email to a friend. To make the advice more fully developed, explain what the lessons involve—for example, whether the academy offers beginner classes or how often you could practise. The claim that swimming is a “responsible sport” is less clear than your other reasons; a more precise explanation would strengthen the recommendation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The email has a clear progression: you introduce your advice, recommend swimming, describe a place to learn, and finish by suggesting that you join together. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” make the connections explicit. The overall organisation is effective, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical because several sentences begin with linking expressions. The final two paragraphs also repeat the invitation to learn together. You could make the ending more concise and use a direct question, such as asking whether Sam would like to enrol with you, to create a smoother close.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “life-saving skill,” “affordable,” “accompany me,” and “five star rating.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the tone is generally appropriate for a friendly email. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “responsible sport” does not clearly express your intended meaning, “secured their admission” is an awkward way to describe students joining, and “join with you” is not idiomatic. “Worldclass” also needs to be written as two words. Aim for more natural combinations and precise wording so that your vocabulary sounds fluent as well as understandable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including “not only because … but also …” and a relative clause beginning “where.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “I just got your letter and glad to advice you,” the second clause needs a verb, and “advice” should function as a noun or be replaced by the verb “advise.” The sentence about swimming also has a mismatch in structure: “refresh yourself” does not parallel “keeps you healthy.” There are further errors in “your’s as well as other’s” and “I am also planning … and was looking.” Check possessives, parallel forms, and consistent verb tense to improve accuracy.
