Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sahij,

How are you doing?

I am writing this letter to suggest you a new sport that you and me learn togther, as well as where it can be learnt.

Although there are many sports in my mind that might be suitable for you,I think swimming will be best option for you as it will help you not only financially but also physically. This is because you can make your career in it along with staying healthy.

The best place to learn it is to joining a school named Carlo School which is situated at the centre of my town. The school offers flexible classes' schedule and has experienced staff who will help you to get expert in short time. Also, it gives discounts up to 15% to new students.

My suggestion is that if we learn this sport together. What do you think about it? Because I also get freet time in the evening which can be utilised in learning a new skill, and your company will make it more comfortable for me by going together.

Let me know if you have any doubts. Hopefully you will consider my suggesstion.

Your sincerely,

Manpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points clearly: swimming is recommended, Carlo School is suggested as a place to learn, and you invite your friend to join you. The reasons—health, possible career benefits, flexible classes and a discount—make the advice relevant and give it some support. Your friendly opening and closing also suit an email to a friend. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain why swimming in particular matches Sahij’s interests or circumstances, and add practical detail about how to enrol or what lessons involve. The career and financial benefits are mentioned rather generally, so a more specific explanation would make the recommendation more convincing and personal.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The email has a recognisable progression from the recommendation to the learning option and then the invitation, with paragraph breaks helping the reader follow these stages. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “This is because,” and “Also” show an effort to connect and extend ideas. However, some connections are awkward or mechanical: “My suggestion is that if we learn this sport together. What do you think about it? Because…” breaks one idea into fragments, and the final reason would flow better as part of the invitation. Use clearer paragraphing and connect each supporting detail directly to its main point. These changes would make the progression smoother and cohesion less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this informal email, including relevant terms such as “flexible classes,” “experienced staff,” “discounts,” and “career.” These help communicate practical reasons for choosing the school and sport. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, including “make your career in it,” “get expert,” and “freet time.” Spelling slips such as “togther” and “suggesstion” are noticeable, although the intended meaning remains clear. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe swimming as a sport that can “offer career opportunities” and say the staff can help you “become proficient.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the “Although” clause and the explanation beginning “This is because.” The main message is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence construction, verb forms, articles and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “I think swimming will be best option” needs an article, while “The best place to learn it is to joining a school” uses an incorrect verb pattern. “My suggestion is that if we learn this sport together” is an incomplete construction, and “your company will make it more comfortable for me by going together” is difficult to parse. Practise complete clauses and check that verbs after “is” and “suggest” follow the correct pattern.
