Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The rendered process depicts the information about the method of making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, the process consists of seven steps of creating sugar. The procedure begins with growing of sugar canes and ends with drying and cooling sugar.
To begins with, sugar canes take 12-18 months for growing. In the second step, there are two routes harvesting the sugar canes first with help of workers and second cutting by machines. After that, sugar canes send for crushing. Once crushing has been completed then it come of liquid form that is juice. Then, it goes to purifying juice with help of limestone filter. Following this step, juice become a syrup in evaporator. In the sixth step, separates sugar crystals from syrup that`s step called centrifuge. Thereafter, sugar store in container for drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main stages and provide a clear overview: the process has seven steps, beginning with cane growing and ending with drying and cooling. You also include the 12–18-month growing period and both harvesting methods, and the sequence is generally accurate. However, some stages are reported less fully: for example, the crushing stage could explain that juice is extracted, and the centrifuge separates sugar crystals from syrup. The final sentence mentions sugar being stored in a container, which is not clearly shown; the diagram indicates drying and cooling. The response is also 15 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to describe the process fully. Add a little more precise detail about the outputs and transitions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement, with an overview followed by a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To begins with,” “After that,” “Following this step,” and “Thereafter” help the reader follow the process. However, the linking is somewhat mechanical, and several transitions are awkward or incomplete, such as “there are two routes harvesting” and “In the sixth step, separates sugar crystals from syrup.” The paragraphing is also limited: the overview and detailed sequence could be separated more clearly. Use a wider range of natural links and make sure each sentence has a clear subject, so the progression remains smooth without relying mainly on step-by-step markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushing,” “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” and “centrifuge,” which makes the stages recognisable. Some less common terms are used appropriately, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural. For instance, “the rendered process depicts the information” is an awkward way to introduce a diagram, and “sugar canes send for crushing” does not express the action naturally. “Sugar store in container” is also imprecise for the final stage. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the general process, but more precise verbs and standard process collocations would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including “Once crushing has been completed” and “Following this step,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, some grammatical errors remain. The opening “To begins with” has an incorrect verb form, while “sugar canes take 12-18 months for growing” has an awkward grammatical construction. There are also missing subjects or verbs in “there are two routes harvesting” and “In the sixth step, separates sugar crystals from syrup,” and agreement is incorrect in “it come of liquid form.” Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise building complete clauses with a clear subject and correctly inflected verb, while retaining your attempts at varied sentence structures.
