IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of production process of sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, the process contain total seven steps before the making of final product, Which initially starts from the plantation of sugar cane then harvesting with multiple ways, then goes though measure the step of extracting juice, then went through some significant industrial process.
Initially the process starts with the planting of sugar cane crop after it grows then, The crop is harvested by labor or automatic machines to extract sugar canes for further process, In the third stage pure sugarcane juice is extracted with help of machines. This extracted juice then subsequently filtered with limestone to purify it .
After that the juice is purify then it cooked on high temperature to evaporate extra water and turn it in to syrup. Next the syrup goes from centrifuge process where the sugar crystals are being separated from syrup. At the final stage, all the collected sugar then stored for drying and cooling process to make the final product useful.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence and give an overview that identifies seven stages, from growing the cane to producing sugar. The harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifuging are all relevant and mostly accurately reported. This meets the task well, and the overview shows some awareness of the process as a whole. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: the cane grows for 12–18 months, which you omit, and “the crop is harvested … to extract sugar canes” confuses harvesting with the later extraction of juice. The final stage is also described as storing sugar, whereas the diagram shows drying and cooling. More precise reporting of these details, alongside the clear sequence already provided, would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an overview followed by paragraphs describing the early and later stages. Time markers such as “Initially,” “In the third stage,” “After that” and “At the final stage” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent overall structure. Some linking is mechanical or repetitive, however: “Initially the process starts” repeats the same idea, and several stages are joined through repeated uses of “then” and “after.” The overview also contains a long chain of stages that is difficult to follow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary the links—for example, group the harvesting and crushing stages, then introduce the processing stages—to make progression smoother and references more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “filtered,” “evaporate,” “syrup” and “centrifuge,” which allows you to describe the main operations. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant industrial process.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, though: “production process of sugar” is repetitive, “goes though measure the step” is unclear, and “useful” does not explain the purpose of drying and cooling. “Pure sugarcane juice” is also misleading because the diagram shows juice being extracted, not already purified at the crushing stage. Choose direct, precise process terms and check that each verb describes the correct stage. This would improve accuracy while retaining the useful vocabulary already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning “after” and “where,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, grammatical control is uneven, with frequent errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence boundaries. Examples include “the process contain,” “the juice is purify,” and “the syrup goes from centrifuge process”; these should use correctly formed verbs and articles. Capitalisation after commas is also inconsistent, as in “then, The crop,” and several sentences contain awkwardly joined clauses. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions of processes, checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and divide long sequences into complete sentences. More reliable control of these basic patterns is needed before the attempted complexity can be consistently effective.
