Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram provides an overview of how sugar is produced from sugar cane.

Overall, the process has seven main stages, planting sugar cane to manufacturing sugar. The last 3 stages of this process are easy because they all are done with the help of machines. While, planting and then harvesting process is quite more difficult and farmer has to wait for a long time.

To begin with, sugar cane, it takes around 12 to 18 months for it's complete growth. Then, the second most challenging stage for some farmers, harvesting sugar cane, who don not have industrial equipment such as Cane Harvester. Whereas, who have those harvesters, their work became more easier. Next, crushing sugar cane by using crusher, extracts juice from sugar canes. After that, extracted juice is purified by using limestone filter.

Subsequently, purified juice is now being evaporated using boilers, and then that juice is becomes syrup. Furthermore, the syrup is now be putted in centrifugal machine, in which a centrifugal force is applied to that juice, which results in separating sugar crystals from syrup. Finally, drying and cooling process begins, as sugar crystals are dried and cooled down, then sugar is ready to use for many purposes like adding sugar in some coffee and sweets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview that there are seven stages, from growing cane to producing sugar. Useful details include the 12–18-month growing period, the two harvesting methods, crushing, limestone filtration, evaporation and centrifuging. This is a solid account of the main features. However, the overview’s claim that the final three stages are “easy” and that planting and harvesting are “more difficult” is an unsupported judgement rather than a comparison shown by the diagram. The comment about farmers’ equipment also takes attention away from describing the process. To strengthen the response, keep the overview factual and explain the key transformation from cane to juice, syrup, separated crystals and finally dried sugar.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a generally logical order: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the later processing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “After that,” “Subsequently” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent overall progression. Some connections are less effective, however: “While” begins a fragment-like contrast in the overview, and the discussion of farmers’ access to machinery interrupts the process description. The final sentence also shifts from the diagram to possible uses of sugar. Use paragraphing to separate the overview from the chronological details, and rely on clear stage-to-stage links rather than extended commentary or repeated transition words.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “crushing,” “purified,” “evaporated,” “centrifugal force” and “sugar crystals,” which helps convey the technical stages. Some less common terms are attempted, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “boilers” is not specified in the diagram, “centrifugal machine” is less precise than “centrifuge,” and “ready to use for many purposes” adds an unnecessary generalisation. There are also awkward collocations such as “complete growth” and “more easier.” Aim for precise, diagram-based wording and natural process collocations. For example, describe juice as being heated in an evaporator and the centrifuge as separating crystals from syrup.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including time clauses and passive constructions, as in “it takes around 12 to 18 months” and “juice is purified.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make relationships unclear. Examples include “planting sugar cane to manufacturing sugar,” “who don not have industrial equipment,” “their work became more easier,” and “that juice is becomes syrup.” The opening phrase “To begin with, sugar cane, it takes…” also has an unclear sentence structure. Practise forming complete clauses and maintaining consistent verb forms, especially in passive process descriptions: for example, “The juice is heated until it becomes syrup.” More accurate sentence construction would make your range easier to follow.
