IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram describes the process how sugar is made from sugar canes.
Overall, the process consists of seven easy steps. These steps start with harvesting of sugar canes and end with drying and cooling of sugar crystals.
At first, sugar canes which are 12-18 months old are harvested. Harvesting can be done in two ways and they are havestiong manually and harvesting through tructors. In the third step the collected canes go through a machine which crush them and make juice from them. Then the juice is pured into a limestone filter to purify. After purifying the juice is heated and through evaporation by heat it becomes juice. In the sixth step the syrup is centrifuged by pouring them in centrifugal machine. in this machine the sugar crystals separate from syrup. At last, the separated sugar is taken into a container for drying. After drying the sugar crystal it rest for cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages and gives a clear overall summary that the process has seven steps and ends with drying and cooling. It also includes the cane’s growing period and both harvesting methods, which are relevant details. However, the overview incorrectly says the process starts with harvesting, although growing is the first stage. There is also a significant process inaccuracy: after evaporation, the juice becomes syrup, but the response says it “becomes juice.” The final stage is described as sugar being dried and then cooled, but the separation of crystals from syrup could be explained more clearly. More precise reporting of these stages would make the account more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and sequencing phrases such as “At first,” “In the third step,” and “At last” help the reader follow the process. The opening overview also gives the response a useful structure. However, the overview’s claim that the process starts with harvesting conflicts with the later account and the diagram, which begins with growing. Some links feel mechanical, and the repeated use of “In the… step” could be varied. The final sentences also break the flow slightly by separating drying and cooling into two statements. Grouping the stages into clearer paragraphs and using more precise references between steps would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant process vocabulary, including “limestone filter,” “evaporation,” “syrup,” “centrifugal machine,” and “sugar crystals,” so the reader can understand most of the account. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “havestiong” and “tructors” are misspelled, while “pured” is not the appropriate form for describing juice passing through a filter. “Easy steps” is also an imprecise description of the stages, and “taken into a container” is less natural than a process verb such as “transferred.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, especially when describing technical actions. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but these inaccuracies limit its precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence structure, including a relative clause in “sugar canes which are 12-18 months old” and a time clause in “After purifying the juice is heated.” Most stages remain understandable despite some grammatical errors. For example, “a machine which crush them” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the syrup is centrifuged by pouring them” has unclear pronoun reference and an awkward passive construction. The sentence beginning “After drying the sugar crystal it rest” also has agreement and sentence-structure problems. Capitalisation is inconsistent, as “in this machine” begins a sentence with a lowercase letter. Review agreement, pronoun reference, and sentence boundaries to make the process description more accurate.
