IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrame illustrates how sugar is produced from sugercane.
Overall, it is a lengthy process making sugar from sugercane connsist of 7 stages. First step is growing of sugercane in soil after that, the harvesting of sugercane crop with both by hand and by machine. Furthermore, crushing of sugercane and in last step drying and cooling of crystals of suger.
At starting it is laboures work growing of sugercane crop for upto 18 months.Furthermore, harvesting of sugercane by human and also by tractors and machines. After harvesting next step is crushing of sugercane to make juice with the help of rollers. Moreover, juice is purifye in funnel shape countainer by limestone filter. Then in the 5th step purifye juice heated on fire in evaporator to make juice becomes syrup. In the very next step with the use of centrifuge machine separates sugar crystals from syrup. At the end last step is drying and cooling of sugar crystals to make regular shape instead of powder.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct order, from growing and harvesting through crushing, purification, evaporation, centrifuging, and final drying and cooling. The overview identifies a seven-stage process and mentions both hand and mechanical harvesting, while details such as the 12–18-month growing period and the limestone filter show relevant attention to the diagram. This meets the task well overall. Some details are less fully or accurately reported: the growing period is described as “upto 18 months,” omitting the lower limit, and the final claim that drying and cooling make the crystals “regular shape instead of powder” is not shown in the visual. To strengthen the response, report the full time range and avoid adding an outcome that the diagram does not establish.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, and the overview is separated from the stage-by-stage account. Time and sequence markers such as “First step,” “after harvesting,” “Then,” and “At the end” help the reader follow the process. This gives the report a coherent arrangement. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, with “Furthermore” repeated and several stages joined into long, loosely connected sentences. The overview also repeats information that is then given again in the detail paragraph. Use a more concise overview, then organise the remaining stages into clear sentences or grouped phases, with varied and precise linking rather than relying on the same connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use several relevant process terms, including “limestone filter,” “evaporator,” “syrup,” and “centrifuge,” which help communicate the diagram’s technical stages. However, spelling errors are noticeable throughout, including “diagrame,” “sugercane,” “connsist,” and “purifye,” and some word choices or collocations are awkward, such as “funnel shape countainer” and “laboures work.” These errors make the vocabulary less controlled and occasionally slow the reader, despite the meaning usually remaining recoverable. Aim to check spelling carefully and choose standard process descriptions. For example, describe juice as being filtered through limestone and heated until it becomes syrup, rather than using improvised phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is limited: several sentences lack a clear subject or a complete verb structure, as in “First step is growing of sugercane in soil” and “In the very next step with the use of centrifuge machine separates sugar crystals from syrup.” There are also errors with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, for example “the harvesting of sugercane crop with both by hand and by machine.” These patterns make some relationships between actions unclear. Practise building complete clauses with an explicit subject and verb, and use consistent present simple passive forms for process descriptions, such as “The juice is purified” and “The crystals are separated.”
