The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The illustration depicts the stages involved in manufacturing sugar from sugar cane from the fields to the end product.

Overall, it is a linear process consisting 7 stages. Commencing with planting the sugarcanes and culminating in Drying and cooling. Throughout this multi-stage process, the sugar cane was harvested, crushed, and purified to initiate heating and the crystals were separated.

Initially, the crop of sugar cane is growed in the fields and then harvested either machenically or manually. The harvested sugar canes are further crushed by a crushing machine to extract its juice into a container. Once the juice is obtained, the liquid was passed through a limestone filter to remove impurities.

The juice was stored into a beaker and heated to transform it into syrup. In the next stage, sugar crystals were separated from the syrup by rotating the syrup, this is known as centrifuge. Finally, the separated sugar was cooled and dried
