Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the process through which sugar is manufactured from sugar cane.

Overall, the sugar comes from sugar canes, which are grown, harvested, and then crushed. The resulting juice will go through a series of procedures, including purification, evaporation, centrifuge, and the eventual drying and cooling to be turned into sugar.

First, to produce sugar, sugar canes must be grown in the fields, which take about 12 to 18 month to mature. The next step is harvesting, which is accomplished either by large trackers or through human labor. The harvested sugar canes are subsequently crushed by a machine which produces sugar juice.

The following steps require more industrial and chemical procedures. The juice will be first purified through a funnel with limesone filter. Then, the purified products are put into a evaporator, the purpose of which is to turn juice into syrup through heat. The sixth step is centrifuge, meaning the separation of sugar crystals from syrup. Finally, these sugar crystals will be dried and cooled for them to become the sugar.
