The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the method of obtaining sugar from sugarcane.

Overall, the operation of producing sugar consist of seven steps from planting the sugarcane plant, once they grow then goes through different procedures like crushing, purifying and finally becomes solid particles of sugar.

Initially, let the plants of sugarcane grow for 12 to 18 months after planting, once reached to the specific height then starts the harvesting process. Once harvesting is completed then crush the sugarcanes to get the juice, then purify the juice through a limestone fiber.

Then the purified juice will be put into a evaporator, that is constantly on the fire until it turns into syrup. The syrup is now ready to turned into solid sugar by a step called centrifuge that separates sugar crystals from syrup. finally, store it for drying and cooling to fully shape into sugar.
