The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The diagram illustrates the process followed for the production of sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the manufacturing process consists of seven distinct stages, starting from the plantation and growth of the sugar canes and ending with the drying and cooling of produced sugar.

At the beginning, the baby plants of sugar canes are left to grow for around a year and a half. Once they mature, they are harvested either by using big harvesting equipment or manually by humans. Thereafter, the sugar canes are passed through a crusher, which squeezes juice. The liquid obtained is then passed through a purification process, where a limestone filter is used to purify the juice.

Next, the purified juice undergoes evaporation (heating of liquid in high temperature) within a evaporator thereby producing syrup. That is followed by a centrifugal process, where a centrifuge separates the sugar crystals from the syrup. Finally, the crystals are left to dry and cool eventually giving the sugar that is fit for consumption.
