The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram depicts the seven stages of making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, there are seven steps included in the manufacturing of sugar, beginning with growing sugar canes in fields and ending with cooling and drying sugar.

To begin with, sugar canes are planted in fields where it take around 12-18 months to fully grow. After which sugar canes are harvested through machines and with the help of humans. Once harvesting process is completed, sugar canes are crushed with a machine to collect all the juice which later purified by using limestone filter.

Additionally, purified juice is collected in a tank so that it can be evaporated with the help of heat, thus as a result juice became syrup. In the 6th step of making sugar, syrup is centrifuged so that sugar crystals can separate from it. At the end, sugar crystals are collected and placed in the container so the temperature can cool down and sugar become dry before using it.
