IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram outlines the process of how sugar is made from sugarcane.
Overall, the process consists of seven main stages, beginning with growing of sugarcane and ending with drying and cooling of sugarcane.
At the initial stage, sugar canes is first grown in farms. Following this, it is then harvested by machine or human, before being crushed in sugar cane machine. Subsequently, after making juice from sugar canes purifying takes place, allowing sugar cane to processed and filter through limestone filter.
In the following stage, purified sugar cane juice, undergoes evaporation stage, where juice became syrup after heated in evaporator and is subsequently become syrup. After this, centrifugation stage occurs where, it separate sugar crystals from syrup using centrifugation stage, before the process finally concludes with drying and cooling of sugar crystals. After drying and cooling stage pure sugar is collected in a jar. Moreover, pure sugar can be collected and this process will continued in the manufacturing factory.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all stages of the process, from growing to the final collection of sugar. The overview is clear and identifies the seven-stage structure. However, the description of the process is somewhat repetitive and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the information. For instance, the transition between the evaporation and centrifugation stages is slightly disjointed. While the main features are reported, the response would benefit from more precise terminology regarding the physical changes occurring at each stage, such as the transition from raw juice to concentrated syrup. Overall, it addresses the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, following the chronological order of the manufacturing process. Paragraphing is used to separate the initial stages from the later ones, which helps the reader follow the flow. Cohesive devices such as 'following this', 'subsequently', and 'in the following stage' are used to link ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrases like 'sugar cane' and 'centrifugation stage', which makes the flow slightly less natural. The referencing is generally clear, but the final sentence is somewhat redundant and does not add significant value to the summary.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the process clearly. There is an attempt to use process-specific terminology such as 'purifying', 'evaporation', and 'centrifugation'. However, there is a noticeable lack of variety in word choice, with the term 'sugar cane' being repeated excessively. Additionally, some collocations are slightly awkward, such as 'sugar cane machine' instead of 'crushing machine' or 'mill'. To reach a higher band, the writer should aim to use a wider range of synonyms and more precise technical vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'sugar canes is first grown', 'allowing sugar cane to processed'). There are also issues with word forms, such as 'is subsequently become syrup' instead of 'subsequently becomes syrup'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be improved by reducing the reliance on repetitive 'and' connectors.
