The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The given flowchart shows the process to yield sugar from sugar canes. At a glance, there are 7 major steps which are followed to obtain fine sugar.

To begin with, Sugarcanes require about 12-18 months to grow properly before they can be harvested. Harvesting can be done by two ways. First is a manual technique and second is using a big harvester machine. Then the sugarcanes are fed into a juice extracting instrument where all the juice can be extracted. After this stage is complete, the juice is poured through a limestone filter in order to obtain purified juice. The juice is then heated in an evaporator till it becomes syrup. The heated syrup is then sent to a centrifuge, where due to high centrifugal forces sugar crystals get separated from the mixture. Lastly, the sugar obtained is stored in a container where it is dried and cooled.

To sum up, there are 7 processing steps involved to successfully obtain fine sugar crystals from raw sugarcanes.
