The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The figure below illustrates the flow diagram of sugar production from sugar cane.

Overall, the process includes 7 steps, starting from upstream to finalize the downstream processing to sugar. The growing takes 12 to 18months. Starting from growing the sugarcane which is first step, and to finally drying and cooling it involves 7steps.

The 2nd step is harvesting, which can be done manually by farmers or automatically by machine. The harvested crop is sent to crusher for extract the juice in the 3rd step. After the filtration of the juice by limestone filter, It is sent to evaporator where the water of juice is evaporated and became syrup.

In the 6th step, the syrup is sent to cetrifuge where the machine separates sugar crystals from it by centrifugal force. Then, the separated sugar crystals are dried and cooled in a chamber. The diagram clearly demonstrates the detailed process step by step serially.
