Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the given diagram, the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane is discussed.Firstly, the sugar cane plant is implanted for 12 to 18 months.Secondly,it is harvested through farmers and trucks.Thirdly, crushing of sugar cane is carried out and juice is produced. In the next step, the purification of the juice occurs by using the limestone filter. After this,it passes through the evaporator and then water evaporated and thick syrup is obtained.Furthermore, the juice is centrifuged and it separates sugar crystals from syrup,In next step, drying and cooling take place and thus sugar is obtained. In this way, sugar is obtained from the sugar cane.By comparing all of these steps it is seen that sugar from sugar cane is obtained by passing through alternative steps.Growing crops, harvesting them, crushing, purifying juice, evaporating the juice, centrifuge them and dryng and cooling are the main steps for obtaining sugar.Sugar cane passes through various stages and then sugar is produced.Sugar is ultimately used for various purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified the main stages of the process, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the key features. The writing is essentially a list of steps rather than a cohesive report. To improve, you should group the stages logically (e.g., cultivation, processing, and final product) and provide a clear introductory overview that highlights the transformation from raw material to finished product. The conclusion is also repetitive and does not add new analytical value.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is organized in a linear, step-by-step fashion, but it lacks paragraphing, which is essential for a clear structure. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' is mechanical and repetitive. The flow between sentences is somewhat disjointed, and the lack of paragraph breaks makes the text feel like a single, dense block. To improve, organize your response into at least three paragraphs: an introduction, a body paragraph detailing the process, and a concluding summary. Use a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely heavily on simple verbs like 'obtained' and 'produced'. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated or precise terminology related to industrial processes (e.g., 'extraction', 'crystallization', 'refinement'). Additionally, there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'implanted' for crops, where 'grown' or 'cultivated' would be more appropriate. To reach a higher band, focus on using more specific technical vocabulary and varying your word choices to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response uses a limited range of sentence structures, mostly relying on simple sentences or basic passive voice constructions. While the passive voice is appropriate for describing a process, the lack of complex sentence structures limits your score. There are several punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'diagram, the', 'Firstly, the'). Additionally, there are minor grammatical slips, such as 'harvested through farmers' (should be 'by') and 'dryng' (spelling error). Focusing on combining sentences using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions would improve your grammatical range.
