How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The picture illustrates the whole process for making sugar from sugarcane. In the next paragraphs, I will discuss the manufacturing step by step.

First step, is growing the sugarcanes which takes approximately 12-18 months to grow enough for harvesting. Secondly, they are harvested by two method traditional and modern. In traditional method sugarcanes are harvested by hands using a sharp blade and in modern method this is done by using machines which cuts them into small pieces which are loaded into large trailers. The next step is crushing in which sugarcanes are passed through a machine which separates the juice and waste.

Moving further, the next is purifying juice using limestone filter and then purified juice is put in a evaporator where it heated and juice become syrup. The sixth step, is centrifuge where sugar crystals are separated from syrup. the last step is drying and cooling the sugar.

In conclusion, the diagram explains the whole process of making sugar from sugarcanes .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the sugar production process, from harvesting to the final cooling stage. However, the overview is missing; a Band 6 or higher requires a clear summary of the overall process or the most significant trends. The description is largely sequential, which is appropriate, but it lacks a cohesive summary of the transformation. While the key steps are identified, the response would benefit from a more analytical approach, such as grouping the stages (e.g., preparation, extraction, and refinement) to better highlight the process flow. The inclusion of specific details like the 12-18 month growth period is good, but the overall structure remains somewhat list-like.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'First step', 'Secondly', 'The next step', 'Moving further'). The transition between sentences is functional but lacks variety and sophistication. Paragraphing is present, but the introduction and conclusion are quite brief and do not fully serve to frame the information effectively. To improve, you should use a wider range of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than just a list of steps.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the process. You use some relevant technical terms such as 'centrifuge', 'evaporator', and 'purifying'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'by two method' (should be 'methods') and 'by hands' (should be 'by hand'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic verbs like 'put' or 'done'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to industrial processes, such as 'extract', 'refine', 'subsequent', or 'utilize'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'First step, is growing' contains an unnecessary comma and a missing article. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'juice become syrup' (should be 'becomes') and 'two method' (should be 'methods'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for articles, plurals, and verb tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
