How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rendered diagram illustrates the information about production of sugar from sugarcane.

Looking at the diagram in more details, it may infer that the first step is the growing of sugar cane crop, which takes 12 to 18 month for full growth, followed by second step which is known as harvesting although, farmers use harvesting machines or cut the crop by their own. Moreover, in the third step large sticks of sugarcane is crushed by machine to produce juice from it and then limestone filter purify the extracted juice.

Turning towards the rest of the details, it can be clearly seen that purified juice is evaporated by boiling it on heat and the heated juice takes form of syrup. Interestingly, then with the help of centrifuge the sugar crystals are separated from syrup. Finally, by the process of drying and cooling the sugar is completely ready.

Looking from an overall prospective, it is readily apparent that the process involves seven steps by planting sugarcane crop, harvesting, crushing, purifying, centrifuge and drying and cooling.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the process, from growing to final cooling. However, the overview is somewhat weak; it merely lists the steps rather than highlighting the main features or the cyclical nature of the process. The description of the steps is generally accurate, but the inclusion of '12 to 18 months' is a good detail. To improve, ensure the overview synthesizes the information more effectively, perhaps by noting that the process is a multi-stage industrial transformation. The response is clear and follows the diagram logically, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5, rounded to 6.0 due to the lack of a strong, analytical overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. There is a clear progression from the initial growth stage to the final product. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking at the diagram', 'Moreover', 'Turning towards', and 'Finally' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate for a process description, but the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, using terms like 'harvesting', 'crushed', 'purified', 'evaporated', and 'centrifuge'. However, there are some awkward phrasings such as 'it may infer that' (should be 'it can be inferred') and 'by their own' (should be 'by hand'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are no significant spelling errors, but the word choices are somewhat basic and occasionally imprecise in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as '12 to 18 month' (should be plural 'months'), 'large sticks of sugarcane is crushed' (subject-verb agreement error: 'sticks' are), and 'from an overall prospective' (should be 'perspective'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The control of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence construction could be more varied and accurate to demonstrate a higher level of grammatical control.
