The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the process by which sugar is manufactured by using raw sugarcane.

Overall, synthesis of sugar is a seven step process in which raw material is processed and passed to several stages and pure crystalized sugar is manufactured.

Firstly, the sugarcane crops are grown by farmwers and after 12 to 18 months they are harvested with the help of machines and people. Then, the cleaned sugarcane is transfered to crushing machine where it is coverted into liquid juice. Next, the juice contains impurities in the form of small pieces of sugarcane and fibers which are removed by using limestone filters. The purified juice is then transfered to heating chamber where the surplus water is evaporated by continous heating and a syrup is prepared. The syrup is moved to a centrifugation machine where sugar is separated from syrup by continous motion of the syrup in the machine. The crystals are then shiofted to the drying and cooling chamber to remove extra water from the finally prepared sugar crystals.
