How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The below diagram illustrates and explains the production of sugar at a commercial scale all the way from the sugarcane to final product "Sugar".

The production of sugar starts all the way from the plantation of sugarcane. Since it's an all-season crop, it can be planted anytime of the year; it takes about 12-18 months for sugarcane to fully mature before it can be harvested. After 12-18 months, it is being harvested by labour or large machinery in case of big areas of cultivation.

The harvesting is followed by crushing of the sugarcane into liquid or juice, which is again filtered with the use of a limestone filter in order to remove any kind of impurities in juice or liquid.

The filtered juice is then sent to an evaporator, where another round of filtering is done by subjecting the juice to heat, leading to the impurities getting filtered out in the form of steam and transforming into syrup.

This syrup is then sent to the centrifuge, utilising the laws of centrifugal force. Sugar crystals present in the syrup are being separated.

After successful separation of sugar crystals, it is kept for drying and cooling, eventually concluding the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main stages of the sugar production process. However, the response lacks an effective overview. In IELTS Task 1, it is essential to provide a summary of the overall process or the most significant features in the introduction or conclusion. Furthermore, you included information not present in the diagram, such as the specific 12-18 month maturation period and the mention of 'all-season crops'. In Academic Task 1, you must report only the information provided in the visual prompt. To improve, focus on describing the stages as they appear in the diagram without adding external knowledge.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically sequenced, following the chronological order of the manufacturing process. You use some cohesive devices such as 'After 12-18 months', 'The harvesting is followed by', and 'This syrup is then sent to'. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the report is presented as a single block of text. Breaking the process into logical stages (e.g., preparation, processing, and final refinement) would significantly improve the readability and structure of your response. Ensure each paragraph has a clear focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'centrifuge', 'centrifugal force', and 'impurities' correctly. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs and phrases. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations related to industrial processes. For instance, instead of saying 'another round of filtering is done', you could use 'the juice undergoes a secondary filtration process'. Your spelling is accurate throughout, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the passive voice in 'it is being harvested' and 'it is kept for drying'. While the grammar is generally clear, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'starts all the way from the plantation' and 'in case of big areas of cultivation', which sound slightly unnatural. Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional choices. The errors present do not impede communication, but more variety in sentence structure and greater precision in phrasing would enhance the quality of your writing.
