The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the production of sugar by seven different processes.
Overall, the diagram provides the information of each method used in the formation of sugar from sugar canes. This production consists of seven stages which are growing, harvesting, crushing, purifying juice, evaporator, centrifuge, and drying and cooling.
Initially, sugar canes are planted in the fields which take around 12 to 18 months to become mature. After sugar canes are grown up, they are harvested either by manually or by using a harvester machine. In the crushing process, sugar canes are squeezed by using a machine and their juice is collected. The juice is then purified by using a limestone filter in the purifying juice stage before sending it to the evaporator phase.
The purified juice is heated to make a syrup in the evaporator and a centrifugal separates the sugar crystals from the syrup in a centrifuge
Finally, it is dried and cooled in a container to obtain the sugar.
