Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, it is linear method which includes 7 different stages. The first three stages consist of extracting juice from the sugar canes, while the other four steps consist of processing and refining into sugar.

Firstly, the sugar cane grows for 12 to 18 months until it gets matured. When the sugar cane is matured its time to harvest them. To harvest there are two methods, doing by hand or using an machinery to harvest these sugar canes.

When all these sugar canes are harvested then its time to crush them. The sugar canes are crushed with the help of a crusher. The extracted juice from the sugar canes is passed through the limestone filter to purify the juice. After that, to convert the juice into syrup evaporator is used. Furthermore, after thicken the syrup centrifuge is used to separate the sugar crystals from syrup. In the final stage, the collected sugar crystals is them dried and cooled.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main stages of the sugar production process and provided a clear overview. The response covers all key steps from cultivation to the final cooling phase. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that you not only list the steps but also highlight the relationships between them more effectively. For instance, you could better emphasize the transition from the agricultural phase to the industrial processing phase. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the main features are clearly reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, moving chronologically through the process. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'When', 'After that', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is underdeveloped; the entire body of the process is contained within one paragraph, which makes the text feel slightly dense. To improve, consider grouping the agricultural stages (growing and harvesting) separately from the industrial refining stages. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, using terms like 'extracted', 'purify', 'evaporator', and 'centrifuge' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'it is linear method' (missing an article) and 'gets matured' (less natural than 'matures'). The vocabulary is generally functional and appropriate for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive sentence structures when describing the actions performed on the sugar cane.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'using an machinery' (incorrect article usage), 'its time to harvest' (should be 'it is time'), and 'the collected sugar crystals is them dried' (subject-verb agreement and pronoun error). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, article usage, and the correct formation of passive voice structures, which are essential for describing industrial processes.
