IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram displays the sequential procedure for sugar production from sugarcane
involving various machinery.
It begins with the cultivation of the crop, mostly by vegetative propagation using
fragments of sugarcane stems. It takes around 12 to 18 months for the sugarcane crop
to reach its mature stage, ready to be harvested. There are two ways in which the crop
can be harvested, the manual and the mechanical methods. Harvesting the crops
manually using an axe is very time consuming, so mechanical method involving a tractor
or other motor vehicle is the preferred way.
Aer the crop is harvested it is cleaned to remove any excess mud and then it is fed into
a mechanical crusher, which extracts sugarcane juice. Purification of the juice is done by
a large funnel with limestone filter that removes all the impurities. The juice is then
thickened and converted into a syrup by a heat-driven evaporator. The sugar crystals are
separated from the syrup by centrifugation using an apparatus called centrifuge. The
resulting sugar crystals are then dried and cooled before being packaged for market
supply.
Overall, the diagram displays a mu-step procedure in a fairly understandable form,
starng from the cultivation of the raw material, sugarcane, and ending with the
production of the finished product, sugar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main stages of the sugar production process, from cultivation to packaging. You have covered all parts of the task well, including the harvesting methods and the technical stages of purification and evaporation. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the entire process. To reach a higher band, ensure that you focus strictly on the information provided in the diagram. For example, you included details about 'vegetative propagation' and '12 to 18 months' which are not explicitly mentioned in the provided diagram. In IELTS Task 1, you must report only the information given in the visual prompt rather than using external knowledge.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial cultivation stage through to the final packaging. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the different phases of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'After the crop is harvested', 'The juice is then', and 'The resulting sugar crystals' help guide the reader through the sequence of events. The flow is natural and easy to follow. To improve, you could vary your linking words slightly more to avoid a repetitive structure at the start of each sentence, but overall, the organization is clear and coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a process description, such as 'sequential procedure', 'purification', 'evaporator', and 'centrifugation'. These terms demonstrate a sufficient range to describe the process with precision. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the changes in state, such as 'crystallization' or 'refinement', which would further enhance the technical quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your writing shows a good control of grammatical structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'The sugar crystals are separated from the syrup by centrifugation using an apparatus called centrifuge.' The grammar is generally accurate, and your punctuation is handled well. There are very few errors, and those present do not interfere with the clarity of the message. To aim for a higher band, you could experiment with more complex passive voice constructions, which are particularly suitable for describing industrial processes, to demonstrate greater flexibility in your grammatical range.
