How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the step-by-step manufacturing process of producing sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the production process consists of seven distinct stages. It begins with growing and harvesting sugar cane and ends with the drying and cooling of the final sugar crystals.

Initially, sugar cane is grown for 12 to 18 months before it is harvested, either by agricultural machinery or manually by farmers. Next, the collected cane is crushed in a machine to extract the liquid juice. as a result The extracted juice is then purified by passing it through a limestone filter to remove impurities.

Following purification, the clean juice is heated in an evaporator, which converts it into a thick syrup. After that, a centrifuge machine spins rapidly to separate the sugar crystals from the remaining liquid syrup. Finally, the separated sugar crystals are dried and cooled in a container, making the sugar completely ready for consumption and distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all stages of the sugar manufacturing process. You have successfully identified the main features, starting from the growth of the sugar cane to the final product. The overview is clear and provides a logical summary of the process. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly mention the input and output at each stage, such as the transition from liquid juice to syrup. The description is accurate and follows the diagrammatic flow well, meeting the requirements of the task by providing a clear, concise summary without unnecessary detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological order of the process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Next', 'Following', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the initial steps from the later refining stages. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between the different steps is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally effective, contributing to the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a process description, such as 'manufacturing process', 'extracted', 'purified', 'impurities', and 'centrifuge'. The terminology is accurate and fits the context of the diagram. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or less common lexical items that would characterize a band 8 or 9 response. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and clear throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'The diagram illustrates...' and 'After that, a centrifuge machine spins rapidly to separate...'. There is a minor punctuation error in the phrase 'as a result The extracted juice', where a comma or semicolon should have been used, and the capitalization of 'The' is incorrect. Despite this, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the grammatical control is strong enough to ensure that the meaning is always clear and easy to follow.
