IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the important steps involved in the manufacturing process of making sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, there are of total seven steps in which the initial step is growing of sugar cane in fields which takes 12 to 18 months of time period. The last step includes the drying and cooling process after the seperation of sugar crystals from syrup.
Looking at the data in detail, the very first step is to plough the sugar cane in soil and wait for more than 12 to 18 months, after this there are two types of harvesting ways by machinery or manually. In the third step, these sugar canes crushed and the juice generated in this process will be taken. Furthermore, this liquid then purified by the help of limestone filter.
Regarding remaning steps, the purified juice is goes into the evaporation process in which juice become syrup by heating on high flame. The sixth step is where sugar crystals will be seperated from syrup and this process is known as centrifuge. At the end the final product is sugar which comes after drying and cooling of sugar crystals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the sugar manufacturing process, from growing the cane to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview in the second paragraph. However, the description of the process could be more precise. For example, you mention 'plough the sugar cane in soil', whereas the diagram indicates 'growing' and 'harvesting'. Additionally, the transition between steps is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that you accurately reflect the specific terminology provided in the diagram and maintain a consistent focus on the sequence of events without adding external information or misinterpreting the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Regarding', and 'At the end', which help the reader follow the sequence. However, some transitions feel slightly forced or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the stages of the process more fluidly. Ensure that referencing is clear; for instance, 'this liquid' is a good use of a cohesive reference, but ensure all pronouns clearly point back to the intended noun.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'manufacturing process', 'purified', 'evaporation', and 'centrifuge'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'seperation' (separation) and 'remaning' (remaining). Additionally, 'plough the sugar cane in soil' is not the most accurate collocation for the initial stage shown. To improve, focus on using more precise technical vocabulary related to industrial processes and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate spelling mistakes, which currently limit your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'the purified juice is goes into' should be 'the purified juice goes into', and 'juice become syrup' should be 'the juice becomes syrup'. There are also issues with article usage and verb forms, such as 'growing of sugar cane' (growing sugar cane). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes.
