IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The figure illustrates seven step procedure for the production of sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, the process consists of seven major steps involving: growing, harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporation, centrifugal, dying and cooling which are included in industrial and chemical procedures.
The process starts from growing sugar cane crops which take 12 to 18 months. After that, they are harvested either by people or machines to make them ready for the second step. Furthermore, harvested sugar crane crops are crushed to produce sugar cane juice. Filtering is an important step which uses limestone filter to purify sugar cane juice.
In fifth step, purified sugar cane juice is converted into syrup by heating process to cause evaporation. Syrup of sugar cane is centrifuged to separate sugar crystals from syrup because they are heavier in weight. Sugar crystals are dried and cooled in the seventh and the last step for the production of sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all stages of the sugar production process, from growing to the final cooling stage. The overview is clear and identifies the main features of the process. However, the description of the steps is somewhat mechanical, and the comparison between the stages could be more integrated. While the main features are reported, the response would benefit from a more analytical approach to the transition between the mechanical and chemical phases. Overall, it successfully addresses the requirements of the task by summarizing the provided diagram accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the process. Cohesive devices such as 'After that', 'Furthermore', and 'In fifth step' are used to guide the reader through the sequence. However, the transition between the final steps is slightly abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows in a logical, chronological order, which makes the text easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'centrifuged', 'purify', and 'evaporation' used correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'seven step procedure' (should be 'seven-step') and 'dying' (which is a spelling error for 'drying'). While the range is sufficient to convey the process clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would elevate the score to a higher band. The vocabulary is functional but not particularly varied or nuanced.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as missing articles ('In fifth step' should be 'In the fifth step') and minor punctuation issues. Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'seven step procedure' instead of 'a seven-step procedure'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control of grammar is generally stable, but more attention to articles and noun phrases would improve the overall accuracy.
