IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrammatic process illustrates the production process of sugar form sugar cane.
Overall, it is a linear process involving seven main stages, starting with plantation of sugar and culminating for production of sugar from sugar cane
Initially, the process begins with the plantation of sugar canes, which takes 12-18 months for grow. Once the sugar cane has been ready, they are harvested either manually or mechanically. Following this, the harvested crop is crushed and formed into a juice by machine.
At the next stage, juice undergoes further purifying by limestone filter. During this stage, impurities are removed from the juice. After being filter, the juice is heated to a high temperature and becomes syrup, it called evaporator stage. The finally sugar is ready before being separated from syrup in the centrifuge, which has a chamber for separation. Finally, sugar is ready for distribution. This process continue with this following stapes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the process, identifying the main stages from plantation to distribution. However, the description of the process is somewhat superficial. For instance, the transition from the evaporator to the centrifuge is slightly confusing, and the final sentence, 'This process continue with this following stapes,' is redundant and unclear as it does not accurately reflect the diagram. While the main features are highlighted, the response lacks a more detailed explanation of the transformation occurring at each stage, such as the specific role of the centrifuge or the cooling process. To improve, ensure all steps are described with greater precision and avoid vague concluding remarks.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Initially,' 'Once,' 'Following this,' and 'At the next stage' helps guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are issues with referencing and sentence structure, such as 'it called evaporator stage,' which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is very short and lacks a clear connection to the preceding information. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'plantation,' 'mechanically,' 'impurities,' and 'centrifuge' used correctly. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'culminating for production' instead of 'culminating in the production,' and 'plantation of sugar' instead of 'sugar cane cultivation.' The repetition of 'sugar' and 'juice' indicates a limited range of vocabulary. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on using more precise terminology and collocations, such as 'refining process' or 'extracting the juice,' and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include '12-18 months for grow' (should be 'to grow'), 'After being filter' (should be 'filtered'), and 'The finally sugar' (should be 'The final sugar'). Subject-verb agreement is also inconsistent, as seen in 'This process continue.' While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on verb forms, articles, and consistent tense usage will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
