The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram depicted the how can sugar is produced
from sugar cane .
Overall it is clear that the process of seven main step
growing ,harwesting,crushing,purifying juice,evaporator
centrifuge and last is drying and cooling.
starting with the growing of the sugar cane are naturally
in 12 to18 months. The first step of grown the sugar cane .Next step is harvesting .Harvesting used two method by hand or manually with agriculture machinary. After harvesting the next is crushing
the process produced the sugar cane to juice .
Further more the after the crushin process exrteccted
juice underground passes through the purifying filtre
is known as limestone filter.Filter are passes the juice in
evaporator . Evaporate is transfering the juice into syrup.
Syrup transferred the next stage centrifuge in which
seprates sugar crystal from syrup. The last and main important step is sugar are drying and cooling so they can used it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main stages of the process, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While the overview identifies the seven main steps, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the transition between stages. The explanation of the steps is occasionally repetitive, and some details, such as the specific duration of the growing phase, are included without effectively linking them to the overall manufacturing flow. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are fully developed and that the response meets the minimum length requirement to avoid a penalty.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes awkward, such as 'Further more the after the crushin process'. The progression of ideas is occasionally disjointed, making the transition between the harvesting and crushing stages feel abrupt. While there is a logical attempt to follow the diagram chronologically, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive sentence structure hinder the overall flow. Improving the variety of transition signals would significantly enhance the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for describing a process, but it is limited and contains several spelling errors (e.g., 'harwesting', 'exrteccted', 'filtre', 'seprates'). There is an attempt to use technical terms like 'centrifuge' and 'evaporator', but the phrasing is often unnatural, such as 'the process produced the sugar cane to juice'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and the errors in word choice and spelling occasionally impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs and nouns related to industrial processes and ensure accurate spelling of key terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('The first step of grown', 'sugar are drying'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('The diagram depicted the how can sugar is produced'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with irregular spacing around periods and commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the text from demonstrating a wider range of structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent sentence formation will help improve this score.
