IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process diagram illustrates the manufacturing process for preparing sugar using the sugar cane.
Overall, it is a linear process that contains 7 different stages of producing sugar using the sugar cane. Starting with growing of sugar canes to drying and cooling them into sugar in the last step.
The first step is sowing the seeds and waiting for 12-18 months for them to grow into large sugar canes. Then the second step is harvesting where the farmers are required to do some hard work using their machines to clean and harvest the canes. After harvesting, the third stage in the process includes crushing where the sugar canes are crushed using the crushing machine to produce juice.
Additionally, after the juice is produced, the next step is its Purification. In this step, the Limestone filter is used to purify the juice. Following, the next step that is Evoporation, here the purified juice is transfered into a large container to convert the juice into a syrup, this step also involves heating. Then the sixth step is called Centrifuge, in which the sugar crystals are seperated from the syrup. Lastly, the final step is drying the sugar completely to remove the excess moisture present in it and then cooling it at last to produce the fine sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main stages of the sugar production process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the chronological sequence of the diagram. However, the description is somewhat mechanical, listing steps rather than synthesizing information. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping related stages (e.g., preparation, processing, and refining) and highlighting the transformation of the product more effectively. While all parts of the task are addressed, the analysis could be more insightful by emphasizing the key inputs and outputs at each stage, such as the transition from raw cane to juice and finally to refined sugar crystals.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow the process chronologically. You use transition words such as 'Additionally', 'Following', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through the stages. However, some transitions feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text, which helps the reader follow the manufacturing process without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'harvesting', 'crushing', 'purification', and 'centrifuge'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'Evoporation' (evaporation), 'transfered' (transferred), and 'seperated' (separated). While these do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. To improve, aim for more precise collocations and ensure accuracy in spelling. Using more sophisticated synonyms for common verbs like 'produce' or 'convert' would also enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'using the sugar cane' (should be 'using sugar cane') and 'cooling it at last' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional slips in sentence construction. To achieve a higher band, focus on reducing these minor errors and incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater precision. Most of your sentences are understandable, but more consistent control is needed.
