Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given process chart depicts the information about production cycle of sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, it is crystal clear that the given process complex which begins with growing of sugar canes and ends at a result of sugar. This procedure contains seven steps to obtain a sugar.

At a fleeting glance, the first and foremost step is to grow sugar canes which takes 12-18 months to turn into its fruiting stage. Following this, after this period it is ready to harvest . It can cut through machines or by manual method. Consequently, after this there is a time to crush the sugarcane and by this it turns into liquid form of juice. Subsequently, limestone filter is used to purify the juice of sugarcane which results into a purified form with no harmful particles in it.

Further delving deeper, it is observed that the next stage is of evaporation which the turns the juice into syrup by placing it into a container on the required heat. In the penultimate stage, centrifuge begins which separates the sugar crystals from syrup. As a result, after drying and cooling of sugar particles ,the main product sugar is obtained.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all stages of the process, from growing to the final product. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear overview. However, the description is somewhat mechanical, following the steps sequentially without highlighting the most significant comparisons or groupings. To reach a higher band, try to synthesise information more effectively—for instance, by grouping the agricultural stages (growing/harvesting) separately from the industrial processing stages. While the main features are present, the summary could be more analytical rather than just a step-by-step narration of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Following this', 'Consequently', and 'Subsequently'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly forced or repetitive in their placement. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking structures rather than relying on standard sequence markers. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'centrifuge', 'evaporation', and 'purify' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'process complex' and 'result of sugar', which sound unnatural. Additionally, the phrase 'At a fleeting glance' is an idiom that does not fit the formal tone required for an Academic Task 1 report. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal or slightly awkward phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly despite these minor issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the next stage is of evaporation which the turns the juice' (incorrect article/relative clause usage) and 'it can cut through machines' (should be passive voice: 'it can be cut by machines'). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and passive voice construction will help improve your accuracy.
