The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates how sugar is produced from sugarcane.

Overall, it is a linear process, it contains seven main stages, beginning with the growing of sugar cane which takes almost 12 to 18 months to grow, and culminating with a drying and cooling process to obtain sugar.

Initially, sugarcane takes 12 to 18 months to grow completely, after it is grown, farmers cut it manually or by a machine. Following this, sugarcane is crushed with a machine, and juice is collected in a container. Once this stage is completed, collected juice is passed by a limestone filter to purify it.

In the next stage, the purifying juice is heated in an evaporator in which the juice becomes a syrup, and then separate sugar crystals from syrup by a centrifuge process, and in the final stage the sugar is dried and cooled, which then we use it in our daily life.
