The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The illustrations provide information about the procedure of extracting and manufacturing sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, it is a 7 step process from the plantation, cultivation and sugar from sugar canes to the purification of the by-product juice and finally to the storing of sugar after it is cooled and dried.

Initially, sugar canes are planted and a phase of 12 to 18 months is required before the plants are tall enough for harvesting. The sugar canes are manually harvested by farmers and sometimes by the mean of mechanical inventions. The collected canes are crushed down by placing them between wheels and rotating them to extract the liquid juice. The collected juice is then funneled down a filter made of limestone to remove any remaining residue and impurity.

The obtained solution is then placed in an evaporator where heat is used to convert the juice into syrup. After the process of conversion is executed, the syrup is poured in a centrifuge. The centrifuge makes use of rotating blades to seperate the sugar crystals from the syrup. Finally, the separated crystals in collected in a container where it is left for cooling and drying and the manufacturing of sugar is completed.
