The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pictorial diagram illustrates the production process of converting sugar cane into sugar.

Overall, the procedure consists of seven steps in which sugar cane passes through numerous stages and give a by product named as sugar.

Firstly, sugar cane having growth of 1-1.5 year is selected and is harvested manually or mechanically and then brought to the desired location. Secondly, the crushing step starts in which sugar cane passed through a crushing machine and is converted into liquid form. After that the juice is transferred for purification. The purifier consists of limestone filter which separates impurities and then shifted it to evaporator. The evaporator consists of flame and its main purpose is to convert the consistency of juice into syrup.

Moreover, syrup is transferred to centrifuge machine which rotates it on maximum speed to separate sugar crystals. Lastly, after drying and cooling of crystals, we obtain our final product sugar.
