How sugar is produced from sugar cane

cambridge ielts writing task 2 sample answers

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram depicts the sugar manufacturing method from sugarcane. It is clearly manifested that the sugar producing process comprises seven sequential steps, including both manpower and machineries.

The whole method can be divided into two parts, one is juice extraction from the sugarcane and the second one is sugar production from the collected juice. Initially, the sugar cane crops are grown on a suitable field for 12 to 18 months till maturity. Afterwards, the harvesting is incorporated, whether manually cutting the sticks with a sickle or cultivating through a tractor. The sugarcane stems are then carried to a crushing machine where the stems are squeezed to extract fresh juice.

Following the process, the extracted raw juice is purified by using a limestone filter. After that, the pure juice is placed into an evaporator, where it is converted into thick syrup. In addition, a centrifuge machine is incorporated to separate sugar crystals formed in the syrup. Finally, the isolated crystals are dried and cooled in a container to produce the final product.

In conclusion, it can be said that sugar is manufactured through a series of processes where fresh sugar cane stems are used to make crystal shaped sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively covers all stages of the sugar manufacturing process, from the initial growth of the sugarcane to the final packaging. You have successfully identified the main features and provided a clear, logical overview of the process. The division into two distinct phases—extraction and production—is a good analytical approach that helps the reader follow the sequence. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly highlight the most significant comparisons or contrasts, such as the difference between manual and mechanical harvesting, rather than just listing the steps. Overall, the information is accurate and well-presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is logical, following the chronological order of the manufacturing process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Afterwards', 'Following the process', and 'In addition' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the overview from the detailed steps. To improve further, try to vary the cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a repetitive structure, but the current flow is already very clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including technical terms like 'centrifuge', 'limestone filter', and 'evaporator'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'manpower and machineries' (machinery is uncountable) and 'harvesting is incorporated' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). However, these do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and ensure that uncountable nouns are used correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used passive voice appropriately, which is essential for process descriptions (e.g., 'sugar is manufactured', 'juice is purified'). While there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'one is juice extraction... and the second one is sugar production' (which could be more concisely phrased) and the use of 'machineries', the majority of your sentences are error-free. Your control of punctuation is good, and the overall clarity of the writing is high. Continue to focus on subject-verb agreement and noun countability.
