The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the procedure followed in order to produce sugar from sugarcane.

The manufacturing process starts from the field of sugarcane after which the harvested sugarcane is crushed to obtain a liquid which is purified, heated and fed to centrifuging machine, before it is dried and cooled to get the final product as sugar crystals.

Sugarcanes require a growing period of about 12 to 18 months. Ripe sugarcanes are then harvested from the field and fed to crushing machine where they are crushed to get juice out of it. The collected juice requires purification that is carried out by using limestone filter. And the filtered juice is heated in an evaporator to convert the juice into a form of a syrup.

Then, the obtained syrup from the evaporator goes through the process of centrifugation where sugar crystals are separated from the syrup. Finally, the obtained sugar crystals are dried and cooled in a vessel to finish the process of manufacturing sugar from sugarcane.
