Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram displays the process by which sugar is manufactured from sugar cane.

Overall, this process consists of five distinct stages. Initially sugar canes are grown, harvested when it is matured and then crushed to produced juice. Afterwards, the juice is purified and heated in an evaporator to form a syrup, which is left to dry and cool before sugar is produced.

At the beginning, sugar canes are grown between 12 and 18 months and harvested as soon it matures. Sugar canes can be harvested either manually or with a machine. Afterwards, sugar canes are crushed with a machine to extract juice.

Furthermore, the juice is purified in a limestone filter. Following that, the juice is then heated in an evaporator to form a syrup. Subsequently, sugar crystals are separated from the syrup with a centrifuge.

Finally, after the separation process, the syrup is then left to dry and cool before sugar is manufactured.
