Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which severely impacts the ability to fully address the task. While the student identifies the main stages of the sugar production process, the description is incomplete, ending abruptly before the final stage. The overview is present but lacks the necessary detail to fully satisfy the requirements of an Academic Task 1 response. Because the response is unfinished and fails to meet the length requirement, it cannot be awarded a score higher than 5.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows some basic logical organization, moving chronologically through the stages of the process. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'then' and 'after that'. Paragraphing is insufficient, as the response is presented as a single block of text rather than distinct paragraphs for the introduction, overview, and body details. The abrupt ending further disrupts the flow and coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing a process but remains quite basic. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'process contain' (should be 'contains') and 'take a juice' (should be 'extract the juice'). The range of vocabulary is limited, and the student relies on simple verbs like 'make', 'grow', and 'go'. To achieve a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise technical terminology related to manufacturing processes, such as 'extraction', 'purification', and 'crystallization'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('process contain', 'sugar canes takes'), incorrect passive voice construction ('this process is happened'), and missing articles. The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the incomplete final sentence. The high frequency of errors across basic structures prevents a higher score.
