Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given diagram illustrates the production process for making sugar from sugar cane .
Overall there is a process of making sugar in different process and it is a linear process .
first process is of growing the sugar cane as well as it takes 12 -18 months for growing , subsequently farmers harvest their crops , later sugar canes are crushing through in machine in the juice form later juice is purifying in the limestone filter next process is of evaporation juice it is heated and becomes in syrup form ,ensuring procedure is centrifuge it seperates the sugar crystal from sysrup with the help of filtering machine and the last process is of drying and cooling later it converted into sugar and dispatch in small packets and sell into the whole seller and at the end it sell from the small shops . this is the following method of making sugar .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all the main stages of the sugar manufacturing process, starting from growing the sugar cane, through harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporating, centrifuging, drying and cooling, to final distribution. The student identifies the linear nature of the process and reports key features adequately. However, the development is limited due to a lack of precise detail regarding equipment or temperature conditions, and the overview is weak, consisting of a single repetitive sentence ('Overall there is a process of making sugar in different process and it is a linear process'). Despite these limitations, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
Coherence is significantly hindered by poor paragraphing and punctuation. The body of the response is written as one enormous, continuous run-on sentence separated only by commas, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the logical progression. While basic transition markers are present ('first process', 'subsequently', 'later', 'next process', 'at the end'), they are mechanically overused and fail to compensate for the lack of full stops or structural division into distinct steps. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall arrangement lacks cohesive polish, aligning best with a Band 4.5 or rounded to Band 5.0 descriptors for mechanical cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent awkward word choices and forms. Examples include 'sugar canes are crushing through in machine', 'juice is purifying', 'becomes in syrup form', and 'it sell from the small shops'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary associated with the process, such as 'evaporation', 'limestone filter', 'centrifuge', and 'crystal', but these are often grammatically mismanaged or clumsily integrated into the text. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control and flexibility remain limited, fitting a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak, primarily due to the severe run-on nature of the writing. Almost the entire text consists of a single compound-run-on sentence linked exclusively by commas and coordinating conjunctions, rather than a mix of distinct simple and complex structures with correct terminal punctuation. There are numerous grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in juice form', 'in syrup form'), incorrect passive/active voice choices ('sugar canes are crushing', 'it converted into sugar', 'it sell'), and tense inconsistencies. The frequency of structural and punctuation errors impedes readability, placing this response at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
