The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the seven-step process of producing sugar from sugarcane spanning from agricultural harvesting to industrial refining.

Overall, the process of sugar making transitions from raw crop cultivation to a final dried product through physical extraction, heat treatment and mechanical seperation.

Initially, sugar cane are grown for 12 to 18 months before being harvested either manually or with the help of heavy machinery. The harvested crops are then fed into mechanical crusher to extract raw juice.

Next, the liquid enters the purification stage, where it passes through limestone filter. The purified juices is then heated in an evaporator until the liquid starts getting thick syrup. The syrup is transferred to a centrifuge, which spins rapidly to seperate sugar crystals from the thick syrup. In the final stage, the seperated sugar crystals are dried and cooled, resulting in the finished sugar ready to use by the consumers at homes or resturants.
