IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of producing sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, it is a linear process contains on seven steps. It starts with the cultivation of sugar cane in the fields and it ended when sugar canes are converted in a crystal form.
Farmar grow the sugar cane fields and looked it for
a long time until it was fully developed. Than he harvest it with help of people. Than these sugar canes are transported to the crushing machine. Crushing machine convert it into juice. This juice put into the limestone filter for purifying. Than it
put in the evaporator to convert the purifying juice
in the form of syrup. After that ,the centrifuge move this syrup to separate sugar crystals from
syrup.
At the end level, it was drying and cooling and the
sugar is ready. In this why, the process of producing sugar from sugar cane is completed. These steps are good for the completion of this process.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student covers the main stages of the sugar manufacturing process from the initial growing and harvesting of sugar cane to the final drying and cooling. An overview is attempted at the beginning stating that it is a linear process with seven steps. However, the response suffers from significant inaccuracies in reporting details directly from the diagram, such as missing the distinction between manual and mechanical harvesting methods depicted in stage two and omitting the limestone filter detail in stage four. Furthermore, some of the information is generalized or slightly distorted, such as stating 'Farmar grow the sugar cane fields and looked it for a long time'. While the overall progression is visible, the lack of precise detail and minor omissions place this response at band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into short paragraphs, attempting to follow the chronological order of the diagram. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive sequencing words like 'Than' and 'After that', which are misused mechanically. Cohesive devices are inadequate and repetitive, and paragraphing is poorly handled with single-sentence paragraphs and abrupt transitions, such as 'At the end level, it was drying and cooling...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with pronoun usage and abrupt shifts between subjects. Overall arrangement shows some basic organization, but cohesion is faulty and mechanical, aligning with a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms such as 'process', 'steps', 'sugar', and 'juice'. There are notable word choice errors and non-standard forms, such as 'contains on' instead of 'consists of', 'Farmar' instead of 'farmers', and 'in a crystal form' instead of 'into crystal form'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are either inaccurate or marred by spelling mistakes ('purifying' used incorrectly as a noun form, 'In this why' instead of 'In this way'). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, fitting a band 4.5 or 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is very weak throughout the text. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'it ended when sugar canes are converted', 'looked it for a long time', 'This juice put into', and 'it was drying and cooling'. Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing spaces before commas ('After that ,the'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and demonstrate poor control over basic grammatical structures, reflecting a band 4.0.
