The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates the sugar making process from sugar cane. The linear process contains seven steps which starts by the cultivation of sugar cane and ends on sugar crystals making by drying and cooling of sugar syrup.

The process starts by the growing of sugar cane which takes 12 to 18 months. Sugar cane removed from farms this step called harvesting then it loaded into lories and send to factories. Next step is crushing in this sugar cane passed by machine where it crushed and the juice collected into containers. Further juice passed through limestone filter, in which all extra material separate from juice and purified juice recieved.

In the next step, juice obatined from filter passed through evaporator where jucie becomes syrup and all water content evaporated by heat. This syrup transfered to next step where sugar crystals separated from syrup this process called centrifuge, this is the point when drums rotate in fast speed to remove syrup and final product sugar crystals are remained. Afterthat, these sugar crystals dryedand cooled and packed into packets. Finaly, sugar send to the market where customers purchased it.
