The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The process illustrates the stages involved in the production of sugar from sugar cane on an industrial scale for commercial distribution.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the production of sugar follows a linear mechanised sequence that begins with the production and harvesting of sugar cane and ends with the drying and cooling of the sugar produced.

At an initial stage, sugar cane is grown in the commercial fields for almost twelve to eighteen months following which the harvesting is done to obtain sugarcane. Harvesting can be done either using specialised machinery or manually by skilled workers. In the next step, the sugar canes are crushed using specialised machinery to obtain sugar cane juice which is then purified using a limestone filter to seprate solid particles and other impurities.

Subsequently, the purified juice is converted into syrup by heating it in an evaporator at a controlled temperature. In the next stage, the syrup is seprated from sugar crystals using a centrifuge machine to obtain pure sugar following which it is drying and cooled for distribution to retail outlets.
