The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of production of sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, it is a linear process, consisiting of seven steps. Starts with growing sugar cane and ending with drying and cooling. The process involves harvesting , crushing, purification, evaporation and centrifuge stages.

In the first step, sugar cane is grown almost in the period of 12 to 18 months, untill fully grow. Harvesting prcocess is started by machines or manually by farmers, and then stalk is transported to crushing area, where sugar cane is crushed into juice.

In the fourth step, juice is purified by using limestone filter, and after purification juice is transferred to an evaporator, where juice become syrup by heating. In the sixth step, sugar crystals are separated from syrup in the centrifuge. In final stage, sugar are dried and cooled, and it is ready for usage.
