Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram depicts how to produce sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, There are six step in the menufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane. Start with growing the sugar plants, harvesting the plants, crushing them and converted into juice, fourth step is purifying the juice, evaporate, centrifuge , the last oe is drying and cooling.

Firstly, Sugar cane need 12-18 months to fully grow, after that the harvesting process start where farmers cut down the trees and washed the sugarcane, than the crushing session start where a machine crush the trees and makes them into fresh juice. The next step is purifying the juice with limestone filter.

The 5th step is evaporator , in this step the juice becomes syrup, the juice left into a jar and heated it for sevarel hours. Centrifuga is a step that separetes sugar crystals into syrup, a round shape fan start in this process. The last step is called drying and cooling, the sugar stayed into the drum and dry for few days.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the diagram illustrating the sugar production process, identifying key stages such as growing, harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporating, centrifuging, and drying/cooling. However, the overview provided in the second paragraph contains inaccuracies, stating there are 'six step' when the diagram clearly depicts seven distinct stages. Furthermore, some of the descriptions are vague or lack precision, and the relationship between stages is sometimes conflated. While the general sequence is outlined, the response would benefit from a more accurate overview and tighter adherence to the visual data provided. Consequently, it fits the descriptors for Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response attempts a paragraph structure, separating the introduction, overview, and subsequent steps of the process. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor referencing and mechanical cohesive devices. Expressions like 'Start with growing', 'fourth step is purifying', and 'The 5th step is evaporator' create a choppy and unnatural flow. Paragraphing is also erratic, with the overview awkwardly combined into the second paragraph rather than standing alone as a proper summary. Punctuation and linking between sentences need significant improvement to achieve a clearer logical flow, placing this response at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a basic vocabulary range suitable for describing a simple process, using terms such as 'harvesting', 'crushing', 'juice', 'limestone filter', and 'syrup'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word formation errors throughout the text, including 'menufacturing' instead of manufacturing, 'sevarel' instead of several, and 'separetes' instead of separates. Additionally, awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'cut down the trees' for sugar canes and 'round shape fan', restrict the score. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task but contains frequent errors, justifying a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response includes a mix of simple and attempted complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent basic errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'Sugar cane need' instead of needs, 'the harvesting process start', 'than the crushing session start', and 'the juice left into a jar and heated it'. Punctuation is also problematic, with comma splices connecting independent clauses (e.g., 'evaporate, centrifuge , the last oe is drying and cooling'). While the meaning is generally decipherable, the high frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors limits the score to Band 5.0.
