The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the method used for making sugar from sugar cane.

Overall, the process involves seven steps beginning with growing sugarcane that takes 12-18 months and finally ending at drying and cooling the produced sugar.

Firstly, sugarcane take 12 to 18 months to grow are grown followed by their harvesting that can involve either manual or mechanical methods like a harvester. Next these harvested sugarcane are crushed in a crushing machine and their juice is extracted which is then sent for purification to remove any impurities in a limestone filter.

Afterwards, this purified juice is heated in an evaporator that transforms it into a syrup. Sixth step involves the centrifugation of the syrup inside which this syrup is rotated on a high speed which separates sugar crystals from the syrup and these crystals move towards the outer region of the machine. At the end these sugar crystals are dried and left in a container for cooling down before using them.
