The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of sugar production from sugar cane.

Overall, the whole process consists of seven steps of cultivation and manufacturing starting from growing sugarcane to drying and coolong of sugar crystals.

Initially, it takes 12 to 18 months for sugar cane plants to grow for harvesting. Harvesting is usually done by two means; one is handmade done by making a clean sweep and other is by using a tractor like machine that collects sugar canes in a large container. In the third step, sugar canes are crushed in a machine to make juice followed by purification of the crushed juice using a limestone filter in a funnel shape.

Furthrmore, the filterd juice is heated in a tube like bottle with a small opening on the top by evaporation to convert juice into syrup.Subsequently, the syrup is centrifuged that helps to separate sugar crystals from syrup. Finally, the sugar crystals are dryed and cooled to make sugar.
