The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

How sugar is produced from sugar cane

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the mechanism of production of sugar from sugar cane.

Overall,the process is quite simple but the growing phase of sugar cane is time consuming.It takes 12 to 18 months for development of sugar cane so that it can be able to harvest and later on used for production of sugar.

First of all, the sugar cane is harvested manually or with the help of harvesting machine.Once the crop is harvested, it is crushed by a crushing device to cultivate a dugar cane juice. Afterwards, the unfiltered juice is purified with the help of limestone filter.It is a cone shaped having filter inside it.The next stage is very important in which purified juice is converted into syrup by utilizing evaporator.The evaporator is heated by fire underneath it.

After the evaporation a centrifugation is done with the assistance of centrifugation machine.It separates the sugar crystals from syrup.In this step sugar crystals settle down while syrup comes on top.After this sugar crystals are dried and cooled to get a final form of sugar.
