The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of sugar form sugar cane.

Overall, the manufacturing process mainly consists of seven steps, beginning with growing of sugar cane and then concluded with drying and cooling of sugar crystals.

The growing of sugar cane take up to 12 to 18 months, once the crop has matured it can be harvested by both manually by hand or with the help of farm equipments. The sugar cane now put into a heavy crushing machine to extract the juice from raw material.

The highly concentrated extracted juice transferred into limestone filter to filter out any impurities. After the filtration process, the juice exposed with an extreme temperature in evaporator, with the help of heat the juice transformed into syrup. This syrup transferred in a centrifuge process which is responsible for separating crystals from syrup. Once crystals are seprated out from syrup, the crystals are collected in a storage where these crystals are left out for drying and cooling purposes.
