Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially and falls significantly short of the word count requirement, containing only 117 words instead of the minimum 150 words. While the candidate attempts to outline the stages of the sugar manufacturing process from growing to cooling, the information presented is overly basic and lacks a clear, overarching overview of the process. Several steps are mentioned sequentially, but the development of ideas is limited, and some details are vague or slightly inaccurate, such as describing the centrifuge as working by the pressure of air. To achieve a higher band, the response must meet the minimum word count, provide a well-developed overview, and report the main features of the diagram more accurately and fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organization by following the chronological order of the process from growing to cooling, but there is no clear overall progression due to a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire text is written as a single block. Cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, and at times inaccurate, relying heavily on simple connectors like 'first of all', 'after harvesting', and 'finally'. Referencing is also weak, with ambiguous pronouns such as 'where there juice is extracted'. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to divide the text into logical paragraphs, introduce a clear introductory sentence, and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately to link the stages of the process smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, featuring basic and repetitive terms like 'sugar canes', 'juice', 'mixture', and 'sugar'. There are several noticeable lexical errors, including word form and spelling mistakes such as 'proceed' instead of 'passed' or 'sent', 'curshing' instead of 'crushing', 'pruified' instead of 'purified', and 'dryed' instead of 'dried'. These errors and the lack of less common vocabulary restrict the response to a lower band. To reach a higher level, the candidate should incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to industrial processes, such as 'extraction', 'filtration', 'crystallisation', and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple or poorly connected clauses run together without proper punctuation. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('the sugar canes takes 12 to 18 months for growth'), subject-verb agreement issues ('farmers cuts them'), incorrect prepositional usage ('for harvesting'), and awkward passive voice formations ('juice is not pruified'). Punctuation is largely neglected, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences. To improve, the student must work on sentence boundaries, punctuation, article usage, and accurately form complex grammatical structures such as the passive voice.
