The diagram below shows the manufacturing process for making sugar from sugar cane.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
How sugar is produced from sugar cane
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The process digram illustrates how sugar is manufactured from sugar cane in various stages.
Overall, The process consist of Seven significant stages. Initially, the sugar cane is grown for 12-18 months before harvest and sent to purifying filter after crushing. Eventually, that liquid is heated and centrifuge to convert into sugar by drying and cooling method.
Firstly, the farmers cultivated there land with sugar cane upto 12-18 months period. After growing the sugar cane is harvested and transfered to crushing machine where the sugar cane is converted into juice. Subsequently, the juice with some impurities that is purified in this stage by Limestone filter then the juice is purifed.
In following stage, the juice is heated because the liquid is converted in to syrup in the process of Evaporation the liquid becomes thicker like syrup. Eventually, the centrifuge is the process which separates sugar crystals from syrup after heating. Finally, the separated crystals are dryed and cooled to form a sugar. Whereas, the sugar is manufactured in seven following stages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all main stages of the sugar-making process, moving from the initial growing period through harvesting, crushing, purifying, evaporating, and centrifuging to the final drying and cooling. It satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.5 because it clearly outlines an overview and presents all key steps in sequence. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the redundant concluding sentence noting that 'the sugar is manufactured in seven following stages,' which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. The selection of data is generally accurate, though minor mechanical details from the diagram are described in a somewhat generalised manner.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response maintains an overall coherent arrangement and presents a logical progression of the manufacturing process from start to finish. The writer attempts to structure the text using sequencing markers like 'Firstly,' 'In following stage,' 'Eventually,' and 'Finally.' Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is occasionally unclear (for instance, the transition between clauses in sentences such as 'Subsequently, the juice with some impurities that is purified in this stage by Limestone filter then the juice is purifed'). Paragraphing is present, but the organizational structure could be smoother and more sophisticated to reach higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'manufactured,' 'harvested,' 'crushing machine,' 'limestone filter,' 'evaporation,' 'centrifuge,' and 'sugar crystals.' There are some vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'digram' instead of 'diagram,' 'there' instead of 'their,' 'transfered,' and 'dryed,' as well as awkward word choices like 'centrifuge is the process which separates.' These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical Band 6 profile where attempts at less common vocabulary are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and passive structures like 'sugar is manufactured' and 'juice is heated.' However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several errors in verb forms, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'the process consist of,' 'cultivated there land,' 'into syrup in the process of Evaporation the liquid becomes thicker,' and run-on structures. These errors indicate a typical Band 5.5 performance where complex structures often contain flaws, though they rarely impede the overall comprehension of the process.
